The Star of India is probably the largest Sapphire gem in the entire world.
Being almost completely flawless it differs from ordinary sapphires by having stars on both sides of the stone.
The Star of India is 563.35 carat or 112.67 grams Star Sapphire.
The Star of India was donated in 1900 by the wealth businessman J.P Morgan to the American Museum of Natural History.
Famously in 1964, October 29th, it was stolen along with other gems including the de Long Ruby and the Eagle Diamond.
Back then the Stones where valued at $400,000. Fortunately the Star of India was recovered ( being completely uninsured )
from a locker in a Miami bus Station.
The Eagle Diamond was never recovered.
The Star of India is also the name of a film Directed by Arthur Lubin in 1953 starring Cornel Wilde and Jean Wallace.
"Star of India" was also a full-rigged iron ship built in 1863 out of Liverpool, UK. This Star of India is currently
in the Maritime Museum of San Diego and can be considered as the oldest active sailing ship in the world.
Star of India is the name of a Clematis flower, hardy and vigourous growing, large Red-Purple flowers, becoming voilet purple with a redder central bar.
